How to figure out what you really want

Many don’t really reflect upon where they are in life or how they came to be there. They live the lives they got instead of the life they wanted, resulting in that they feel out of place and disappointed about the situation they are in. Take control of what comes to you instead of just floating by and later wondering why you feel out of place. But how can you honor your dreams if you are not aware of what they are? To figure out your goal and your inner purpose can be tricky, but here is a guide to help you find your true wish in life. The first step to reach it is to find out and concretize what it is.

Desire is mentioned by great success teachers such as Napoleon Hill, Tony Robbins, Dr. Joe Dispenza and Wallace D. Wattles to be fundamental for reaching what you want.

It makes sense, if you have a desire or longing and your thoughts are focused on that outcome, your unconscious is more likely to guide your decisions and actions towards that certain goal.

So how to find ones desire? How do we know what we really want?

Starting out on this endeavour it might be hard to know where to begin, in what area, what to take into consideration, what are the limits, and so on. It’s especially hard to dream and let yourself think freely if you haven’t done so in a while, maybe not since you where a child.

Do you remember how it was back then, when everything was possible. No need to think about “realistic” circumstances. This is actually exactly what you should strive for.

Take Action – Open yourself up

To do something you’ve never done before, you need to do something you’ve never done before.

If it really was a long time ago that you dared to think and dream freely, you need to practice this ability again. To do something you haven’t done in a while will take courage and effort. It will feel hard and tough, ridiculous even, but if you really want a change and find your inner direction in life, it will be worth it.

Opening up your mind for possibilities and to find your inner desires, here are some practices to help you on your way.

Get to know your desires

Aids: Take a notebook and dedicate it to your success notebook. Grab a pen that you like. Sit down in a quiet space where you feel safe and calm, and get going:

ACTION: Make a bucket list with minimum 100 entries
If there where no limitations, and I mean NO limitations at all, what would you like to do, be part of, visit, explore, enjoy, own, experience in your life? Think completely free!

To come up with 100 things that you want to do might seem simple and if that is the case you have a good start. Even so, start listing them in your notebook.

When you are done, celebrate and enjoy the feeling of being open and the prospect of being able to dream again!

Visualise what you like, love and want!

Now that you have opened your mind for what you want to do in life, start collecting evidence for those things and put it up on a vision board. Let it be playful and fun and revise it as you go along. Search the internet, magazines, books and photos and put it together, physically or digital. When you are done, make sure to put it in a place where you’ll see it often to help your mind stay focused on your desires.

ACTION: Create a visualisation board
Fill it with pictures, words or things that wake certain feelings in you and remind you of what you want.
Some tips: dream house, family, travel locations, money, dream car

Imprint your desire in your mind and body

The law of attraction implies that if you want something, you should feel like you already have it. Can be tricky, I know. The following action will help you accomplish this in a straight forward way.

ACTION: Write a dairy entry from your ideal day
How would your ideal day look like? Where do you wake up, with whom? What do you do during the day, how do you do those things? How do you feel during the day? How does it smell, sound, feel on your skin?
Make it so real and in detail as if it is a real memory.

When you live out your ideal day “memory” in your mind, your body starts acting as if it was real. Ever heard of the placebo effect? It works for more than just test groups for medicine. Our minds and bodies have a lot of powers still unknown to us. Just because we might not understand exactly how it works, doesn’t mean we can’t use the benefits of them.

Meditate and visualise on your ideal day and feel how it is to be there. To help yourself even further, do a voice recording of your written ideal day and listen to it while walking or commuting. The more you focus and relive this day, the stronger you will be drawn to it.

By focusing on the end goal instead of the next step, you open yourself up to see new opportunities that you might never have seen otherwise. Lift your vision and open yourself up for all different paths that will take you to a realisation of your dreams and a new happier you.
