Hi there,
I hope you have had a great week and weekend! đ
For some, magical moments is a rare thing. Those moments that sticks out and get stuck in our memories for years to come. And for others, magical moments is a common part of their daily life.
Magic happens in the day to day. What makes it stick in our memory is how we handle the moment when it occurs and how we act to save it in our mind.Â
Do you keep a diary? If you do I think you can relate to this, that when you read about what you did an ordinary day a year ago, even though the day had stress in it, there was also something beautiful and worth remembering? How you sang loud to a good song on the radio? How you played with kids? How you had a great conversation? A feeling of satisfaction for something you accomplished?Â
If you donât have a diary today I encourage you to try it. If you feel it takes a lot of time for you, decide to focus on just noting down three good things with each day as a start. The good things is what is most important to remember when looking back.
If you feel you have nothing good to write, remember that a learning is a good thing.Â
So when something donât turn out how you wanted, note down what you learned from the experience. Instead of settling for the âthis did not turn out wellâŠâ go instead for âsince this did not turn out well Iâve learned thatâŠâ. Make the bad and frustrating moments useful and let them help you for the future.Â
Apply a growth mindset to your days and more moments will turn out to be magical.Â
Â
Can you plan for an everyday with more magical moments?Â
If you are used to focus on the positive in each day you will find it even though things donât go to plan. But to feel that sense of freedom in the day to do what you feel for in the moment over time, planning does help.Â
To plan in a good way for yourself, start by looking at a day from last week and just go through what you actually did that day hour for hour. Get some insight in what steals your time and energy as well as what showed to be glimpses of magic.Â
As an example, when working as a consultant and project leader, the email inbox often became a black hole where the my whole day seemed to just waste away and left me with thoughts about all I needed to do.
On the other hand, the magical moments that I choose to remember from that day was the five minute playtime with my daughter in her room building a tower out of blocks.Â
So, how to create a day where the inbox don’t drain all energy and make more space for magical moments?
Prioritizing means deselecting. If we want to prioritize something it means that we need to choose not to focus on something else. The opposite of multitasking. It does good to remember ourselves about this now and then. đÂ
For me the inbox meant multitasking deluxe, going through several different customers demands at the same time and in a chronological mix as the requests or questions had come in. This resulted in my mind bussing of ALL different questions and tasks and projects at the same time, ending up in mind exhaustion.Â
Having understood that this was my reality, I could now learn and do some changes to my approach. The first change I tried was to change the sorting of the emails in the inbox from chronological to customer. Meaning that I dealt will ALL questions related to one customer first, before moving on with the next.
In the second iteration for making the inbox walkthrough more pleasant and diminish the multitasking was sorting by customer AND project. Instead of dealing with all the tasks going on with a particular customer at once, handling one at a time. This reduced the mind space that my customers occupied in my free time, all thoughts about things I had to solve or do or plan, and let me have more magical moments with my kids not interrupted by work-thoughts.Â
What drains time and energy in your day? Having understood that this is bothering you, what can you do to meet this with another approach? Try and test different ways until you find what works best for you.Â
Most importantly though, is to start noticing and actively remember the magical moments in your everyday.
I wish you an amazing week ahead,Â
Isabel
